NERVE PAIN

Nerve pain, also known as neuropathic pain, is caused by damage or irritation to the nerves. It can result from conditions like diabetes, shingles, or a herniated disc. Symptoms include sharp, burning, or tingling sensations, often in the limbs. Nerve pain can be constant or intermittent and may worsen with touch or movement. Treatment may include medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes to manage pain and improve function.

Types of Nerve Pain (Neuropathy)

Nerve pain, also called neuropathy, happens when nerves are damaged or irritated. It can feel like burning, tingling, stabbing, numbness, or electric-shock pain. There are different types of nerve pain depending on the cause and the area affected

1. Peripheral Neuropathy

This is the most common type. It affects the nerves in the hands, feet, arms, and legs.
Symptoms:

  • Tingling or numbness

  • Burning pain

  • Weakness in limbs
Common Causes: Diabetes, vitamin deficiency, alcohol use, infections, toxins.

2. Diabetic Neuropathy

This type occurs in people with diabetes due to high blood sugar damaging the nerves.
Symptoms:

  • Pain or numbness in feet and legs

  • Loss of sensation

  • Foot ulcers
Prevention: Good blood sugar control, healthy diet, regular exercise.

3. Sciatic Nerve Pain (Sciatica)

This affects the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back to the legs.
Symptoms:

  • Sharp pain from lower back to leg

  • Tingling or weakness
Common Causes: Slipped disc, spinal problems, long sitting hours.

4. Trigeminal Neuralgia

This affects the facial nerve.
Symptoms:

  • Sudden severe facial pain

  • Electric shock-like pain

  • Triggered by chewing or speaking
Common Causes: Nerve compression, aging, nerve disorders.

5. Post-Herpetic Neuralgia

This happens after shingles (herpes zoster infection).
Symptoms:

  • Burning pain in one area

  • Sensitivity to touch

  • Skin pain after rash heals
Common Causes: Nerve damage from viral infection.

6. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

This affects the median nerve in the wrist.
Symptoms:

  • Hand numbness

  • Weak grip

  • Tingling in fingers
Common Causes: Repetitive hand work, typing, wrist pressure.

7. Cervical or Lumbar Radiculopathy

This happens when spinal nerves in the neck or lower back are compressed.
Symptoms:

  • Neck or back pain

  • Pain radiating to arms or legs

  • Muscle weakness
Common Causes: Disc problems, arthritis, spinal injuries.

8. Autonomic Neuropathy

This affects nerves that control internal organs.
Symptoms:

  • Digestive problems

  • Blood pressure changes

  • Heart rate issues
Common Causes: Diabetes, infections, autoimmune diseases.

9. Alcoholic Neuropathy

This is caused by long-term alcohol use.
Symptoms:

  • Burning pain in feet

  • Muscle weakness

  • Poor balance
    Prevention: Avoid alcohol, improve nutrition.

10. Nutritional Neuropathy

This happens due to vitamin deficiencies.
Symptoms:

  • Tingling

  • Fatigue

  • Weakness
Common Causes: Lack of Vitamin B12, B6, folate.
